Cable Cars

The famous San Francisco beloved cable car came to be in 1869 after a horrible accident witnessed by Andrew Smith Hallidie. Hallidie noticed the steep San Fran hills were especially wet that day and therefore created a slippery danger to all riding on them. Nearby National Parks

There are plenty of beautiful sights to see in San Francisco. One of the closest to the city is Alcatraz Island, the infamous federal penitentiary. This prison has been long closed to the public and is also the site of the first lighthouse.

Yosemite National Park, located in the High Sierra, also is relatively close to San Francisco. Not just a great valley, but a shrine to human foresight, the strength of granite, the power of glaciers, and the persistence of life. It was granted protection in 1864, has nearly 1,200 square miles and is best known for its waterfalls. To plan a visit, please visit the National Park Service.
