York Road Initiative

Govans Farmers Market

The York Road Iniative is a place-based community action strategy focused in the Govans community of north Baltimore City, specifically, Cold Spring Lane (Loyola Evergreen Campus) to Northern Parkway (Loyola Clinical Centers at Belvedere Square) and involves community constituencies, including neighborhood residents and associations, faith-based, civic and business organizations, public and private leaders. It has four main focus areas, three of which are outlined in this website. They are listed below with descriptions of how this is executed in the Govans community.

Civic Capacity

Community leaders at Dewees Recreational Center
In order to grow in civic capacity, YRI supports and nurtures community leaders to ensure community based voice is at the forefront of change. This work occurs in conjunction with the York Road Partnership, a coalition of 20+ neighborhoods, organizations and nonprofits working towards positive change.

Commerical Corridor

Community Day fun times
For commerical corridor development, YRI works with the local businesses community to grow a thriving commercial corridor in Baltimore City that provides for the needs of both residents and merchants.

Food Access

Food Resources distributed through Govans Presbyterian
York Road Initiative works with residents to research and develop sustainable models for food access and security in the Govans area. Projects include the Govanstowne Farmers’ Market, FreshCrate, and a Community Fridge.
