Little Women shows the lives of the four March sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. Following a non-linear format, the movie highlights key events from their childhood as well as the present day, eventually meeting up by the end of the movie. Told through the perspective of Jo, every character is tailored to how Jo views them.
Jo dreams of becoming a famous writer. However, she faces many challenges in her life. She wants to live a simple life where she remains close with her three sisters, as well as thrives in her writing career. However, as time moves forward, Jo sees her family growing up, and beginning to become more independent from each other. Two key events shown in the movie are Meg's marriage, and Beth's death from scarlet fever, as those are two moments where Jo believes she has lost her sister.
Jo continues to push to stay single all her life because she believes she does not need a man in her life. However, she comes to terms with it all and goes to profess her love to Laurie. Things are ruined though as Laurie, who has moved on from Jo, is now married to Amy. In the end, Jo ends up marrying Friedrich Baer, one of the other teachers in the school she worked at, and they are able to open their own school for all children to come and learn.
