Jo March
Josephine "Jo" March is the second oldest March sister, played by Saoirse Ronan.The movie is told from her perspective, highlighting key points within her life through the movie's non linear format. She longs to be writer, and hates the idea of settling down and getting married. She goes to teach in New York, in order to fund her writing career, as well as help provide for her family at home. She rejects Laurie but regrets her decision when it is too late. She marries Friedrich Bhaer, a fellow teacher in New York, and runs a school for children with him in the home that Aunt March left to her.
Meg March
Magaret "Meg" March is the eldest March sister, played by Emma Watson. She wants to live a happy life, and wants to act. However, she ends up giving that up to marry John Brooke, the tutor to Laurie, and having two children with him. She is the sister who is groomed to be married and have children quickly.
Beth March
Elizabeth "Beth" March is the third oldest March sister, played by Eliza Scanlen. She is very shy throughout most of the movie but is able to express herself in her love of and talent in the piano. She is invited to play and is eventually gifted a piano by Mr. Laurence, who lives across the street. Sadly, she contracts scarlet fever twice and succumbs to the disease on the second time.
Amy March
Amy March is the youngest March sister, played by Florence Pugh. She is very mischevious, stirring up drama throughout parts of the movie, including burning Jo's novel, almost drowning, and getting her foot stuck in a bucket. She is chosen by Aunt March to go to Europe with her, in order to perfect her painting skills. Aunt March believes she is the only one who can save the family by marrying rich. She eventually marries Laurie, who had moved on from Jo and was in Europe with his grandfather.
