Study Abroad: Weekend Destinations

Bopping Around Barcelona, Spain

I have had the priviledge to have visited Barcelona twice, and also live in Southern Spain for a month. Because of this, I have quite of bit of solid recommendations for this lovely and lively destination.

Wondering What To Do?

During the day, you must take a stroll down "Las Ramblas". This is the a famous street covered in shops and restaurants that runs through part of Barcelona and ends by the sea. You should stop by the "Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria" for a snack of empanadas or a fresh fruit juice. It can be a bit touristy, but it is a must see.

Two very popular attractions are "La Basílica de la Sagrada Familia", which is the beautiful basilica still being built, but nonetheless phenomenal. The other attraction, Park Güell, is a stunning park designed by Antoni Guadí. Guadí's unique art and architecture combined with the beautiful views of the city and sea make this place breaktaking, particularly during sunset.

I 100% urge you to take a cooking class. My friends and I did a paella and sangria cooking class (with appetizers like chorizo, jamón, pan con tomate, olives and more wine!)
We all agreed it was one of our abroad highlights.
Besides paella, I recommend trying tapas and traditional dishes such as tortilla de patatas, croquetas, patatas bravas, gazpacho, and more!

As for nightlife, Barcelona is covered with fun restaurants, bars, and clubs. In particular, famous clubs like Opium and Razzmatazz line the shore of the beach. There is even an IceBar on the beach! Besides these large club settings, it is very easy to find a more chill cafe or bar if that is the vibe you're looking for.
